Embracing Adventure & Leading Through Design
My Journey in Vietnam
In 2013, I embarked on a life-changing adventure to Vietnam, long before it became the bustling tourist destination it is today. It was a time when the streets of Saigon still held their raw charm, and the unfamiliarity of the culture, food, and way of life was an open invitation to explore.
For me, this trip wasn’t just about discovering new landscapes; it was about personal and professional growth. Immersing myself in a completely different culture pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. I tried new foods, experienced local traditions, and formed friendships with people from all walks of life. Those loving memories of discovering Vietnam’s heart and soul continue to inspire me today.
But perhaps the most transformative part of the journey came unexpectedly. Despite having no formal experience leading a design team, I found myself in the unique position of spearheading a group of four talented designers. We were tasked with building products from the ground up, and as the design lead, I thrived in that responsibility.
It was a fearless dive into leadership—where every challenge I faced became an opportunity to learn and grow. Whether it was leading brainstorming sessions, tackling complex design problems, or guiding the team through creative blockages, I quickly developed a skillset that continues to shape how I approach design today.
Soon after, I partnered with a CEO from the Netherlands to help establish a startup in Vietnam. Together, we built an entire office, growing a team of employees and laying down the foundation for a successful business. It was a hands-on experience that gave me invaluable insight into startup dynamics, business operations, and team management—all while honing my design leadership skills.
This chapter of my life demonstrated my ability to adapt quickly and thrive in unfamiliar situations. I didn’t back down from challenges, even when I had no prior experience. It fueled my determination to approach every project with the belief that no matter how difficult, with focus and drive, I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
This experience in Vietnam wasn’t just an adventure—it was the beginning of my career as a product designer and leader. And it solidified my belief that great things happen when you embrace the unknown with open arms and a fearless mindset.
